Harold Baines was drafted by the Chicago White Sox with the first overall pick in the 1977 draft, and spent more than a decade with the team. After one hit and two walks in his first 11 plate appearances of the game, Baines did just that. When Harold Baines stepped into the batter’s box for his 10th at-bat of the game, 752 pitches had been thrown over the course of two days at Comiskey Park in Chicago. The White Sox not only took Baines in the first round of the 1977 Draft, but they took him No. 1 overall. With the Orioles going nowhere and Baines hitting .322 with 24 homers through 107 games, he was again traded to a contender, the Cleveland Indians, for minor leaguers Juan Aracena and Jimmy Hamilton. He finished the year with 103 RBI, becoming the second 40-year-old in history to drive in more than 100 . The Indians lost in the ALDS to the Red Sox, but Baines hit .357 in 4 games with a homer. Baines hit .309 and recorded a career-high 113 RBI in 1985, finished 9th in the MVP voting, and was selected to the All-Star team for the first time. He singled against old teammate La Marr Hoyt in his one plate appearance (Baines would also be selected as an All-Star in 1986, 1987, 1989, 1991 and 1999).
Harold Baines was elected to the National Baseball Hall of Fame on December 9, 2018, by the Today's Game Era Committee, along with ace closer Lee Smith. Baines had been eligible for the National Baseball Hall of Fame beginning with the 2007 election. While 75% of the vote is needed for induction, he never received greater than 6.1% . On January 5, 2011, Baines received just 28 votes (4.8%) in the 2011 Hall of Fame election, dropping him off all future writers' Hall of Fame ballots by receiving less than 5.0% of the vote.

In 1992, the Athletics returned to the playoffs, but lost to the Toronto Blue Jays in the ALCS. As a hitter, Baines was a disciple of Charley Lau, the White Sox hitting coach during his early years in the majors, and he hit the ball to all fields . He lifted his right foot off the ground as he started to swing the bat, like Mel Ott and Darryl Strawberry. Baines was considered a good right fielder with a strong arm early in his career, but never had much foot speed, and a knee injury he suffered at the end of 1986 relegated him to DHing for the rest of his career.
And he’s one of the game’s classiest players, who earned nothing but plaudits from his teammates and opponents alike. The game was tight until the fateful eighth inning when the White Sox blew it open. Ujdur was replaced by southpaw reliever Dave Rucker, making his first appearance of the season, and just the third of his career, since his promotion from Evansville. With one out, Rucker caught the speedy Bernazard napping at first, but his throw sailed over first baseman Richie Hebner’s head for a two-base error. The next batter, Steve Kemp, singled to drive in Bernazard, opening the flood gates and sending Rucker to the showers. After Kemp greeted veteran rubber-armed reliever Elias Sosa by stealing second, the slow-footed Luzinski was treated to an intentional walk in hopes of a twin killing.
The discrepancy in records lies with how BaseballReference and Retrosheet calculate tie games. BaseballReference bases it on the date the game was originally scheduled and Retrosheet on when it is finished. The White Sox went 11 innings against the Minnesota Twins on April 2 this season, and starter Erik Johnson made his way to the bullpen but never pitched.
With runners on second and third and two outs, Billy Ripken drove in Young with a single off DeLeón to bring the Orioles to within one run. Baltimore tied the game on back-to-back walks to Cal Ripken Jr. and Eddie Murray, which chased DeLeón from the game. Scott Nielsen came in from the bullpen and gave up singles to Larry Sheets and Ray Knight, accounting for three more runs, before Terry Kennedy flied out. All five runs they scored were charged to DeLeón and were unearned because of Guillén’s error, which would have ended the inning had he made the play cleanly. Batting third and starting as the designated hitter, Baines struck out but reached base on a throwing error by Orioles catcher Terry Kennedy in his first plate appearance.
He graduated in 1977 from St. Michaels High School on Maryland's Eastern Shore where, as a senior, he batted .532 and was named a high school All-American. The White Sox made Baines the first overall selection in the 1977 amateur draft. He received a signing bonus of $32,000 – a record low for a first overall pick.
